Science fair projects

There is a growing demand for Drosophila stocks that are suitable for high school science fair projects. While it is a routine practice in research labs to use allelic combination, overexperssion or knocking down of genes for specific experiments, high school students often prefer to use stocks off the shelf, due to budget constraints and time limitation.

Alleles listed below are homozygous viable, so they are ready to use, unless there are floating balancers in the stock, which need to be selected against for testing. Please note that in many stocks there are other components that may be unrelated to the alleles of interest. Students need to consult with their project advisors in choosing the appropriate control genotype for each test genotype. Because most inquiries from high school students are related to human diseases, we list alleles primarily based on their use in modeling diseases, in addtion to other phenotypes of broad interest.
