Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and/or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by expansion of a hexanucleotide repeat (GGGCC) in the C9orf72 gene. FTDALS1 is form of ALS accompanied by progressive dementia affecting personality, behavior and language. Not all ALS patients with expanded repeats develop FTD.
